Getting into wing foiling is easier than ever — but choosing the right gear can make or break your first sessions. In this guide, we break down the essential components you’ll need to get started, with tips for selecting beginner-friendly equipment.
1. The Wing
Your wing is your engine. Beginners should look for:
-
Size: 4–5m² is ideal for most conditions under 90kg body weight. Lighter wind = bigger wing.
-
Handles vs Boom: Handles are lighter and simpler. Booms give more control but add complexity.
-
Design: Look for a stable wing with good low-end power and easy handling.
2. The Board
The board you choose affects how quickly you get flying.
-
Volume: Aim for a board with 20–40L more than your body weight in kg (e.g. 90kg rider = 110–130L).
-
Width: Wider boards (70cm+) help with balance and water starts.
-
Construction: Inflatable boards are great for travel but hard boards offer better performance.
3. The Foil
Your hydrofoil is what lifts you out of the water.
-
Mast: Start with a short mast (60–80cm) for easier control.
-
Front Wing Size: Bigger wings (e.g. 1800–2200cm²) create more lift and stability at low speeds.
-
Foil Type: Choose a foil designed for low-speed lift and ease of use, not racing.
4. Leashes and Safety
Safety gear keeps you connected and protected:
-
Board Leash: Coil leashes are best to avoid drag
-
Wing Leash: Usually wrist-mounted
-
Helmet & Impact Vest: Recommended, especially when learning
5. Pump
Don’t forget a pump with the correct adapter for your wing (often sold separately).
Bonus: Wetsuit
NZ conditions can be cold. A good wetsuit (3/2 or 4/3) will keep you riding longer.
