Cabrinha currently have 2 excellent foils in their range, the Prestige & the Whippet. Both are great new foils, below have a look at how they work in our conditions in Canterbury, NZ.
Prestige
The Cabrinha Prestige is very well suited to Canterbury, particularly if you're talking about wing foiling on the Christchurch Estuary, Lyttelton Harbour, Sumner and other local flat/choppy-water spots.
For Canterbury conditions.
Canterbury typically gives you gusty, variable wind, strong periods of wind.Water conditions are relatively short/choppy water on the Estuary, wind swell on the Harbour, and onshore small waves in Sumner, plus a range of conditions on the Lakes. The Prestige's characteristics are actually a good match:
- Very high aspect ratio — low drag and excellent speed.
- Excellent glide — useful when Canterbury wind temporarily drops, and riding Harbour wind swells, and Sumner waves.
- Early lift for its size — the 905 is reported to lift surprisingly early despite its thin profile.
- Good stability at speed — important when the Harbour gets rough, and the waves in Sumner pick up.
- Moderate anhedral makes it easier to initiate turns more than many high-aspect race-style foils.
- The wingtip shape is designed to tolerate breaching, which is useful in confused chop.
The big question: which size?
If you're still around 85 kg, as you mentioned previously:

Cabrinha rates the 905 for roughly 10–20 knots and describes it as suitable from intermediate through pro, while the 760 is aimed at stronger conditions and advanced/pro riders.
For an 85 kg rider, I'd choose the 905 as the main Canterbury foil.
The 905 is 1,000 mm span and AR 11, so it's a genuinely high-aspect foil, but not an extreme race foil.
One particularly useful feature is that the Prestige is not simply a "race foil".
The 2026 design uses a medium-camber profile specifically to balance early takeoff with stable performance at speed.
One caution
At 85 kg, I wouldn't automatically buy the 1150 just because Canterbury has lighter days. The 1150 will give you fantastic low-end performance, but the 905 should have a much wider useful range and will be considerably nicer once the Harbour gets properly windy and choppy.
If you're looking at one foil to leave on the board most of the time: Prestige 905/180 would be my pick.
The Whippet
How it suits Canterbury conditions
Ideal for:
- 15–30+ knots, which is common around Christchurch.
- Harbour / Sumner sessions where you want to carve swell rather than just blast in a straight line.
- Coastal riding in Pegasus Bay with wind swell.
- Tight turns, wave riding, and freestyle-inspired manoeuvres.
- Very predictable in choppy water conditions , easy to push when the conditions are rough .
Because you're lighter, you'll:
- Get onto the foil earlier.
- Pump more efficiently between swells.
- Find the foil more forgiving in transitions.
- Be able to ride a slightly smaller front wing without sacrificing too much low-end.
Strengths in Canterbury
The Whippit should perform very well in:
- NE sea breezes (15–20 knots): lively and playful.
- SW fronts (20–35 knots): quick response and excellent control through chop.
- Small to medium wind swell: one of its strongest environments.
- Lake winging, Coleridge & Clearwater
Things to keep in mind
If you frequently ride in 10–14 knots, the Prestige will still get you foiling sooner.
The Whippit is aimed more at riders who enjoy:
- carving,
- surfing swell,
- linking turns,
- and an active riding style,
rather than maximizing low-end efficiency or long-distance cruising.
Recommended rider level
For an 85 kg rider, I'd say the Whippit is best suited to:
- Intermediate: You'll grow into its manoeuvrability and responsiveness.
- Advanced: You'll be able to fully exploit its quick rail-to-rail transitions and carving performance.
Overall
For an 85 kg rider in Canterbury, I'd rate it:
- Flat water: ★★★★☆
- Chop: ★★★★★
- Wind swell: ★★★★★
- Wave riding: ★★★★★
- Light wind: ★★★☆☆
- Progression: ★★★★☆
Overall, it appears to be an excellent match if your focus is dynamic wing foiling rather than simply getting on foil as early as possible.

I'd lean Prestige 905 over the Whippit if your riding is primarily freeride, cruising, speed, upwind/downwind and getting the most out of marginal wind. Go for Prestige if you like using a smaller wing , more of a surfer / foiler style of riding, love flagging the wing.. |
