APEX HD
The NeilPryde Apex is a very good match for Canterbury windsurfing, particularly if you're sailing in the Christchurch Estuary, Lyttelton Harbour, Canterbury coastal beaches and gusty, high-wind Canterbury locations, such as the lakes, Coleridge & Clearwater.
The important point is that the 2026 Apex is a new sail, replacing the Atlas. NeilPryde positions it as a power-oriented wave sail with a particularly wide wind range, strong low-end drive and good control when overpowered.
- REPLACING THE ATLAS
-
- Compared to the Atlas, the Apex is far more agile and user friendly. With the new outline and 4 batten configuration from 5.1 and down, it feels less like an Atlas and more like a Combat on steroids. Instant power to get you going and allow you to jump as high as possible but still extremely maneuverable on the wave!
NEXT-LEVEL JUMP & WAVE CONTROL – CLASSIC HEAVY DUTY
- Power Wave – HD but still ultralight and extremely maneuverable.
- Teamriders’ choice in high wind jumping conditions.
- Extra power but still extremely agile.
- 4 battens 3.6 - 5.1 | 5 battens 5.5 - 6.3.
Meet the brand new Apex, a new generation of wave sail that redefines performance.
4 to 5-batten Apex complements the legendary Combat, focusing on explosive jumping, a wide wind range, and total control even when overpowered.
Developed for riders who demand power, stability, and control without sacrificing lightness or agility, the Apex combines the DNA of the award-winning Combat with extra bottom-end drive and unwavering balance.
The result is a true wave sail with a silky, effortless feel that elevates your riding in gusty or extreme conditions. Chosen by Marino for boundary-pushing jumps and by Robby and Morgan for the toughest Maui winds, the Apex inspires confidence to go bigger and ride harder.
Apex HD features Power HD Technology in the foot and clew, with Ultra PE yarns aligned precisely along load paths, delivering crisp response, maximum durability, and razor-sharp control. The HD version features an X-Ply window for extra strength and even lighter weight.
Why it suits Canterbury -
| Canterbury characteristic | Apex |
|---|---|
| Gusty wind | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Strong gusts / overpowered | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Variable wind | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Estuary blasting | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Jumping | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Wave sailing | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Early planing | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Light-wind cruising | ⭐⭐⭐ |
| Racing | ⭐⭐⭐ |
The big advantage is its combination of power and control.
Canterbury often gives you a relatively soft period followed by a sharp increase in wind. The Apex is designed to generate power early but remain stable as the wind increases. NeilPryde specifically describes the sail as having strong low-end drive, early planing and stability at the high end.
The 5.5–6.3 m Apex is particularly interesting
For Canterbury, I would pay particular attention to the 5.5, 5.9 and 6.3 sizes.
The larger Apexes have five battens, giving them a more powerful and stable profile.
The 5.5–6.3 range is effectively the modern development of the Atlas concept, but with a higher-aspect outline intended to improve handling.
For example:
- 5.5 — 400 RDM, 172 cm boom
- 5.9 — 430 RDM, 178 cm boom
- 6.3 — 460 RDM, 184 cm boom
Apex vs Combat
| Combat: lighter, more neutral, more wave-oriented and very manoeuvrable. | Apex: more powerful, more forward drive, better acceleration and more stability in gusts. |
This is where I think the Apex makes sense for Canterbury.
NeilPryde describes the Apex as having more bottom-end power than the Combat while retaining high-wind control.
WIDE WIND RANGE
Taller and slightly wider than the Combat, the Apex is designed to get going quicker in the low end and handle more wind in the high end due to the narrower head and higher aspect ratio.
The HD has an X-Ply window and reinforced construction designed for durability, while still being relatively light.
Given the combination of strong gusts, hard crashes, shallow-water sailing and general Canterbury abuse, the extra durability is worthwhile. Specifically, I'd be looking at an Apex quiver of roughly 4.7 / 5.5 / 6.3 m², with the 5.5 and 6.3 doing most of the Canterbury work.
